Tumbbad: A Tale of Greed Beyond Fear

Tumbbad is a village situated on the banks of Jagbudi River in Ratnagiri district in the Konkan division of Maharashtra, about 292 kilometers from Pune. This village is famous for crocodiles and hidden treasures.  The local people of the village say that there is an ancient treasure buried under the ground in a major area of the village, but no one knows the exact location. Director Rahi Anil Barve had heard the film’s story in 1993 from a friend. he wrote the first draft of the film in 1997, when he was just 18 years old. Production on the film first began in 2008 with Nawazuddin Siddiqui, but was shelved due to the producer’s withdrawal.

Since 2008, the shooting of Tumbbad started thrice and seven production companies chose it, but they backed out. Although principal photography began in the monsoon of 2012 and took six years to complete. Rahi Anil Barve was not satisfied with the writing and the film was re-shot in 2015. Tumbbad was released theatrically on 12 October 2018. Made on a production budget of Rs 5 crore, the film grossed a total of Rs 12.15 crore at the box office at that time, making it a profitable venture. Now the horror-fantasy film Tumbbad has been re-released in theaters on 13 September 2024.

Is tumbbad a real story ?

Tumbbad is based on the story of a village which is known by the same name and has a dark history associated with it but the village Tumbbad is real, although its portrayal in the film is different from reality. There is no historical connection between the village and the mythological story of the film.Tumbbad is based on the short story by Marathi writer Narayan Dharap, which is based on the short story “Gramma” by Stephen King. Tumbbad tells a rich visual story about greed, gold, and the curse of a demon god. It’s a fictional story but the local people of the village believe that Tumbbad hides an ancestral treasure whose value is beyond any numerical figure.

However this may be a myth, as no one knows where the treasure is buried.
Haster is a fantasy, and his inspiration actually comes from an American horror story, written by none other than Stephen King and the name Hastar comes from the Cthulhu Mythos. Although the Tumbh places Hastar as a Hindu deity, there is no known mention of Hastar in Indian mythology.
This reality is fully reflected in the story of the film, as in order to save Hastar’s life, all notices of Hastar, as per the circumstances of the divine beings, had to be erased .

The story emphasizes human nature and never-ending greed and is based on the myth of the greedy god Haster . As per Tumbhad, the world was created by the Goddess of Prosperity, who gave birth to 160 million divine gods and goddesses. Hastar is the first and most beloved son of the Goddess of Prosperity and the Earth is her womb. Haster was greedy, he took all the gold from the Goddess and wanted to own all the crops as well but all gods and goddess stop him. the goddess of plenty loved her first son. before haster turned into dust, she resque him but on one condition no one will worship him and he will be forgotten.

Tumbbad is divided into three chapters, which director Rahil Anil Barve said is also an allegory of “the journey of India, as we see it today”. The initial runtime of Tumbbad was around 200 minutes which was reduced to 100 minutes. The shooting of the film continued for a long time. The scenes shown in Tumbbad city, where it rains throughout the year, were shot across four monsoons. The background music score was composed by Jasper Kyd of Assassin’s Creed fame. Mohammad Samad played two roles in the film. The first is Pandurang Vinayak’s son and the second is Vinayak’s grandmother.

Sohum Shah gained 18 kg for his role and he kept his character the same for 6 years and when the budget of the film ran out, producer and actor Sohum Shah had to sell his house and car to complete the film. Tumbbad became the first Indian film to open the prestigious Venice International Film Critics Week.

Tumbbad, the city actually existed but the folklore does not exist anywhere which is consistent with the theory that the god demon Hastar would never have been written about The story of Hatsar is related to Narayan Dharap’s old book ‘Anolakhi Disha 3’, while the name of the story is Aaji. The title is taken from Shripad Narayan Pendse’s novel ‘Tumbadche Khot’. when we look at the locks, the bus that has been used, it’s a bus from 1935. The bike that has been used is also from that era. they have made it in detailed That’s why we Can Say that it’s a hight concept film.

Tumbbad was shot at various locations where people had not visited for 100 years. The “Wada” mentioned in the film, where the property is hidden, is believed to be located in Tumbbad, but the real estate is located in Saswad, near Pune. Tumbbad was shot in various areas across Maharashtra, remembering the cities of Saswad and Satara regions.
Some scenes were shot on sets built in Mumbai, including the womb scene. The womb scene was shot in digital format on a red camera without any sunlight.

Why should we watch Tumbbad?

“Tumbbad” is a fantastic watch, a haunting and mesmerizing film that explores the dangers of greed . It is establishing itself as a unique masterpiece that deserves its place among the greatest of Indian cinema . horror is not the Correct word for tumbbad. we can’t diffin the correct jondra. We need to see this movie because there is not a single movie from this jondra.


The film Tumbbad revolves around one thing and that is greed .
In Tumbbad, we see the effect of greed on different people and we need to learn how greed can destroy our lives.The story of Tumband is not new at all. More than the lust of every human being, when the greed and anger and desire within the mind go beyond limits, whether it is a child or a grown up or an old man. It takes her towards the end.if you watch the film there are a lot of layers, there are lot to learn.
