The Mahua Moitra Controversy: What’s The Newest Update On The Case?

by | Nov 14, 2023 | INDIAN POLITICS | 0 comments

The BJP Member of Parliament, Mr. Nishikant Dubey, accused TMC’s Mahua Moitra of accepting money from Businessman Darshan Hiranandani in return for asking questions in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Dubey forwarded an official letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Mr. Om Birla, requesting Mahua Moitra’s suspension.

The Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has asked for an investigation into this case and has decided to take action against Moitra. The Ethics Committee asked the government to commence an extensive inquiry against Mahua because of her seriously objectionable, immoral, and criminal act.

More Insights Into The Recent Development

Businessman Darshan Hiranandani has filed an affidavit stating that Mahua supplied him with her Parliament log-in password. Hiranandani did not claim to give any money to Mahua Moitra in return. Whether the country’s security and interests were compromised during this heinous act is not clear yet. The Ethics Committee asked the Lok Sabha Speaker to expel Moitra.

On the other hand, the Secretary General of Lok Sabha said that the Ethics Committee doesn’t have the right to suspend any Members of Parliament; only the Lok Sabha Special Committee possesses the right to do so. The Lok Sabha Secretary General further said that the Lok Sabha Special Committee must only look after this case.

Can Mahua Challenge The Ethics Committee At The Court?

The Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha forwarded a 479-page case report and further suggested that Moitra be expelled from the Lok Sabha. The Ethics Committee will present its report in Lok Sabha during the upcoming Parliamentary Session. After the Committee presents the report, there will be a debate on this case in the Lok Sabha.

In the end, the government can make an expulsion proposal. If votes go in favour of the Ethics Committee, Mahua Moitra can get suspended. If investigations of any kind find that the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee has made use of any process that is unconstitutional or that Mahua Moitra was not given natural justice, she can challenge the final decision in court.

What’s More From The Case?

In these cases, the chances of reaching the doors of the court are very low from the end of the victim. Mahua Moitra has said that if she gets suspended from the Lok Sabha, she will triumph over the next Lok Sabha elections again. Additionally, it appears like Moitra won’t challenge the decision of the Ethics Committee in court either. Mahua Moitra knows very well that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections will start soon and that the court case can drag on for an extended period of time, ultimately benefiting her in the long run.
