Shah Rukh Khan and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi were featured in a romantic comedy movie, “Kabhi Haan and Kabhi Naa,” which was directed by Kundan Shah and released in 1994. Suchitra starred as ‘Anna and Shah Rukh depicted the role of ‘Sunil’ in the movie.
During an interview session, Suchitra was asked about the shooting of the slap sequence in the film. It was not easy for Suchitra Krishnamoorthi to slap Shah Rukh Khan for the shoot. But it was finally done after multiple retakes and a whole lot of tears. She revealed that the team did “a lot of takes” for the sequence, which was difficult for her.
She said I started crying because I had to slap Shah Rukh, and it was going take after take. Finally, I burst out crying because I couldn’t do it anymore. I was like, ‘How can I slap someone?’ Kundan (the director) was particular that it be real; we wouldn’t do playacting. Shah Rukh, of course, was a gentleman, so he wouldn’t say anything, but I could see him flinch. I burst out crying and said, I can’t do it anymore! By the end, Kundan had his say.
For her, it was “very painful” to do the scene. “I mean, normal people don’t go and slap other people. Shah Rukh is a pro, but I couldn’t do it; I just burst out crying,” she added.
The actress had also said that Shah Rukh was newlywed when they were shooting for ‘Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, and Gauri Khan would visit the sets often. SRK would look more at Gauri than at Suchitra while shooting the scenes, and that’s why the love in his eyes seemed so real. Shah Rukh would often imagine Gauri while shooting with Suchitra, and that further added authenticity to his character, Sunil.
Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa was a low-budget movie. The cast and crew used to stay in the Goa Tourism Guest House, where the rooms were okay. The actress also revealed that there was very little budget even for refreshments such as cold drinks and sandwiches.
The coming-of-age romantic comedy Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa also starred Deepak Tijori and Naseeruddin Shah. The film completed 29 years of release recently, and on the occasion, Shah Rukh revealed he learned an important life lesson from the film.
During the 29th film’s anniversary, Shah Rukh posted about the movie and said he missed Kundan Shah. He wrote, “At that stage, in that age, raw, uncontrolled, craft still undefined, surrounded by the best cast and crew in India, and a director who I miss every day! Taught me that sometimes you lose the moment but win everything else. I am sure somewhere in the world, Sunil did too!”
Shah Rukh’s role as Sunil in Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is still considered one of his best performances. The actor has also listed the film as his favourite.
Meanwhile, Suchitra did other Hindi films like the Anil Kapoor starrer My Wife’s Murder, Rann, Romeo Akbar Walter, and was recently seen in Prime Video’s Guilty Minds.
