It seems that the new movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ cannot be kept out of problems since its inception in the theatres. Whether it is the stereotypical portrayal of the characters or the use of controversial dialogues inside the movie that had even led to political issues, this movie has remained a tad muddled up since the setting of the movie in the theatres. Now another fresh controversy has sprung up recently because of one particular scene in the movie which has led netizens to criticize and make sarcastic comments on the hero and heroine duo of the movie, Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. Things went a tad further with their chemistry on the screen compared to that of the ever-romantic on-screen couple Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Devgn, so much so that the producer of the movie, Karan Johar (KJo), had to step in for their defence. He took it out on the netizens advising them against finding issues with everything in the Hindi movies and criticizing any movie at the drop of a hat. He has broken his silence on the most criticism-inducing scene of Ranveer Singh moving his face away while Alia Bhatt flips her hair and has slammed the critics for comparing the hero and the heroine duo to the iconic duo of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.

The Hair-Flipping Controversy

No Karan Johar (KJo) film is out of controversy and criticism and the same thing is applicable for the present movie also. The scene featured the hero and the heroine, ‘Rocky Randhawa’ and ‘Rani Chatterjee’ enjoying a romantic dance to the song ‘Tum Kya Mile’ with the snow-capped mountains of Kashmir in the background. This dance sequence was planned by Karan Johar (KJo) himself to bring within his films the vibes of Yash Raj Chopra films. This was Karan Johar’s (KJo) own style of paying homage to the legendary film producer and director. At one point in the dance sequence, the hero, ‘Rocky Randhawa’ swiftly moved his face away to protect himself from getting touched by the hair of the heroine as ‘Rani Chatterjee’ flipped her hair as an act of romance. This particular scene has brought in a lot of criticism from the side of the fans as they were upset with the style of reaction that Ranveer Singh had towards Alia Bhatt’s romantic reactions. Some netizens even went to the extent of calling out Ranveer Singh and comparing them to the iconic romantic Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Devgn chemistry, which they had been winning every fan’s heart for so many decades now. They pointed out how Shah Rukh Khan had always allowed the hair of the heroine to fall on him and never flinch or move his face away. This movie garnered heavy flak and sarcasm from the audience.

Karan Johar Comes to Rescue

Now that the movie, despite it being a bit muddled up with everything, is getting a good response, especially, due to the featuring of the veteran actors in the movie, Karan Johar (KJo) has decided to step up in the defence of the actor and justify the particular scene from the dance sequence. He said in an interview, “Yeh kahaan se aaya mujhe samajh hi nahi aata, unki itni chemistry hai, (I do not know, where this came from. They have such brilliant chemistry. How can you show the chemistry in two minutes?)” He further told in the interview, “There was so much chatter about that hair-flip. I didn’t even notice it, I was like, ‘Did he move his head? Okay maybe.’ I saw it later…” When he was questioned about the comparisons that are being made between a similar hair-flip shot that featured Kajol and Shah, Rukh Khan, Karan said, “How can you live up to that? You can’t, right? But I still wanted to satisfy my urge to go to Kashmir and shoot a love song. Hoga comparison, of course, hoga. Maine hi woh gaane banaye hain, main phirse kar raha hoon (Of course there’ll be comparisons. I made those songs, and now I’m doing it again).” He further clarified with the critics that the gesture by Ranveer Singh’s character was not merely a lack of chemistry between the two actors on the screen but that the actors were choreographed to execute the dance sequence in that manner. He saw nothing wrong in it. Karan called out the critics and advised them against finding fault with every movie and criticizing them even at the drop of a hat. He said that it has become a fashion among critics to criticize every Hindi movie out there.

He further told in the interview that he had in his mind a romantic song sequence that is to be shot with Kashmir and snow in the background and so he did it. He sounded disapproving of the critics when he said that they have been giving negative reviews regarding certain aspects of the movie ever since it landed in the cinema halls. He said that he thought that he possibly was being unable to communicate the movie to the audience with much effect and so they have failed to grasp it properly. Regarding the song, he told that he would not like anybody from the newer generation of actors to be compared with the iconic duo of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s on-screen romance and that he would again make such song sequences in the future also.

However, despite the criticism and flak that the movie is getting since it landed in the cinema halls, it has also started to get some positive reviews also. This has somewhat boosted the morale of the makers of the movie and they are expecting the movie to be on the list of the top-grossing Hindi movies sooner or later. The film ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ will feature Ranveer and Alia as the protagonists with other equally popular actors such as Jaya Bachchan, Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi in important roles.
