OnePlus 12: The Ultimate Flagship Killer or A Disappointing Flagship?

by | Jul 15, 2024 | Mobile Phone | 0 comments

Oneplus 12

In the global world of smartphone manufacture, where such titans as Apple and Samsung have been reigning for years, OnePlus introduced itself as the company that changes the world and the principles of its functioning. Founded in 2013, OnePlus has managed to create a more specific market for itself and, by doing so, has become a company known for creating good electronic products at a reasonable price range.

Their first product that they released in 2014, the OnePlus One, exhibited good performance features, stylish and fashionable looks, and simplicity in handling the operating system. It quickly amassed a massive following among people. The term “flagship killer” was associated with the Oneplus as the company brought out their phones like the Oneplus 3 and Oneplus 5 with premium components, including snapdragon processors, generous RAM, and bright displays, which cost revolutionary less than the so-called flagship models.

Now today, we’ll talk about the “Oneplus 12,”  the latest flagship killer title holder. However, as OnePlus has evolved, its devices have also become more premium, and their prices have moved closer to those of other flagships. This evolution blurs the line between being a flagship killer and being a flagship competitor. Over the years, OnePlus has evolved into more of a flagship brand itself, competing directly with other high-end smartphone manufacturers rather than solely aiming to undercut them on price.

The Oneplus 12 has several upgrades from last year’s OnePlus, such as an improved display, a bigger battery, and an and an improved camera. It also brings back the wireless charging support that was removed last year. However, the price of the phone has increased. So, let’s see whether it’s a flagship killer or a flagship itself:

Display and build quality of Oneplus 12:

The OnePlus 12 features a 6.82-inch (3168×1440 pixels) LTOP AMOLED display with a 1-120Hz refresh rate, which is better than the OnePlus 11. This phone has the largest screen that OnePlus has ever produced. The display comes with 4,500 nits of peak brightness in HDR use cases or 1,600 nits in high brightness mode. The OnePlus 12 has three refreshing rate choices, namely Auto, Standard, and High. Snapdragon has Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection for the phone. It also has support for HDR 10 that apparently works for YouTube, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, and Dolby Vision works for Netflix.

The phone does not have a notification LED, but it has an always-on display that displays relevant information and notifies of new messages all day or based on a schedule. Oneplus 12 has a strong vibration motor. The phone is 9.15 mm thick and weighs 220 grams. It only has IP65 for dust and splash resistance and lacks IP68 ratings.

Camera Performance of Oneplus 12:

The OnePlus 12 has a triple camera setup on its back, a 50MP primary, a 48MP ultrawide and a 64MP telephoto for 3x optical zoom. It is almost the same pattern as the one used on the OnePlus Open model. The layouts of the UI of the camera in OxygenOS 14 are rather recognizable. This is followed first by Pro mode, Panorama, Macro, FLIM, Slo-mo, Time-Lapse, Dual-View video, text scanner, starry mode, & tilt-shift.

The 50MP rear camera comes with a 1/1.4″ Sony LYT-808 sensor with a pixel size of 1.12µm. It’s a stabilized lens with a 23mm equivalent focal length and an f/1.6 aperture. The phone comes with a 4th Gen Hasselblad Camera for Mobile and Hasselblad Portrait Mode. Daylight shots came out well and the dynamic range is also better with auto HDR.

The 48MP rear camera comes with 1/2″ Sony IMX581 sensor with pixel size of 0.8µm. It’s an autofocus lens with a 14mm equivalent focal length and an f/2.2 aperture. It also comes with macro capabilities, which capture well enough macro shots.

A high-resolution 64MP OmniVision OV64B 1/2.0″ sensor with 0.7µm pixels powers the telephoto lens. The periscope Lens’s focal length is equivalent to 70mm and the aperture is f/2.6. Its close-focusing capability is more intriguing than the ultrawide.

The 32MP selfie camera comes with the Sony IMX 615 1/2.74″ sensor with 0.8µm pixels. The lens has a 21mm focal length and an f/2.4 aperture, and the focus is fixed.

Recording video is also impeccable on the OnePlus 12 and can go up to 4K/ 60 via the three lenses at the rear part and 8K/24 on the main lens. Although the selfie camera can shoot 4K video at 30fps, there is no 60fps mode for the selfie camera at any resolution. There is always-on electronic stabilization available across all four cameras and there is also ultra-steady mode, which is limited to 1080p at 60 fps.

The OnePlus 12 runs Android 14-based OxygenOS 14 out of the box. It has Android security patch for December 2023 The phone will receive 4 Android updates and 5 years of security updates, as OnePlus 11 has. OxygenOS of version 14 includes Trinity Engine with HyperTouch, HyperBoost, and HyperRender. OnePlus 12 comes with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which is Qualcomm’s premium processor for 2024, We’ll see most flagship phones using this chip.

It exists in two sub-models with different quantities of RAM and ROM: 12/256GB and 16/512GB, with the storage type of UFS 4.0. Built on the TSMC 4nm Process Technology like Snapragon 8 Gen 2. It has guarantee of 30% performance boost and 20% gain in power consumption. The smartphone has OnePlus and Google apps, in addition to other preinstalled apps such as Spotify and Netflix. Battery Performance of Oneplus 12:

The Oneplus 12 packs a 5400mAh (typical) battery, which is slightly bigger than the 5000mAh battery in the Oneplus 11. It can easily last for one day with heavy use and if you are a normal user, it will easily last two days. Since the phone has support for 100W SuperVOOC fast charging, it can charge from up to 100% in less than half an hour.

There is smart charging option to stop charging at 80% and the smart rapid charging can charge the device faster if the battery is too low. Fortunately, in the OnePlus 12, this company has restored the feature of wireless charging that was omitted in the OnePlus 11. The phone has wireless flash charging with 50W, and the phone itself also support wireless reverse charging. It can be charged up to 100% in less than an hour with a wireless charger.

Conclusion:

At a starting price of Rs. 64,999, the OnePlus 12 is a good upgrade and a good comeback from OnePlus since it has several improvements, right from the display, performance, and cameras, and also brings back the wireless charging. Subsequently, it can be concluded that the new OnePlus 12 may possess series of advantages and enhanced value and performance, but as for the dispute over its capability to be a genuine flagship killer in the current market environment, this is debatable and must be referred to in relation to the relation of this new device to other flagships in terms of its features, performance, and price.
