The new Harley-Davidson X440 then uses a 440cc, single-cylinder, oil-air-cooled, twin-valve configuration engine that produces a maximum power of 27 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 38 Nm at 4,000 rpm.  Built around a trellis frame, the bike uses 43mm inverted front forks and gas-charged, pre-loadable dual rear shocks to handle the suspension. Braking is handled by separate disc brakes on both wheels, while the safety net consists of dual-channel ABS and an engine side-stop function. The Harley-Davidson X440 is a cruiser available in 3 different versions and 4 colours. The price of the X440  starts at Rs. 2,29,000 in India, with the top variant priced from Rs. 2,69,000. The Harley-Davidson X440 is powered by a 440cc BS6 engine that produces 27bhp of power and 38Nm of torque. With both front and rear disc brakes, the Harley-Davidson X440 has an anti-lock braking system. This X440 bike weighs 190.5 kg and has a fuel tank capacity of 13.5 litres.

Design

In terms of design, the X takes some cues from Harley’s own XR 1200. As a result, the Harley connection is more than obvious. And if not, there are more than 12 logos around the wheel to remind you. The 440 is a good-looking motorcycle; harmonious and pleasing to the eye. The attention to detail is well executed in places and unless it’s pick and roll it looks like a  well-put-together motorcycle. However, when you select and play, some inconsistencies appear. The matte plastic between the gauges and headlights looks and feels delicate. The finish around the frame is poor at times. And the closed lines between panels could be more consistent. I’m also not in favour of the horizontal bar connecting the two bottom tubes of the grille frame. It’s necessary to add rigidity to the chassis, but the way it blocks the view of the engine makes it feel like an afterthought. The Harley-Davidson X440 has a strong neo-retro stance, borrowing some of its styling cues from the iconic Harley-Davidson XR1200. It has a retro-style round LED headlamp and a stylish modern  LED DRL strip with “Harley-Davidson” engraved on it. Fully LED lighting is standard. The boxy 13.5-litre peanut fuel tank gives the bike a tough look and complements the one-piece seat quite well. However, the exhaust sticks out like a sore thumb because it’s not flush with the floor for a clean classic look, and it’s not sportier either.

Performance And Powertrain

The Roadster has an all-new 440cc, 2-valve, air-oil-cooled, single-stroke engine. It produces 28bhp at 6000rpm and 38Nm at 4000rpm. The company claims that 90 per cent of the torque comes from as early as 2,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox and gets a slipper and auxiliary clutch. As driver aids, you get traction control and dual-channel ABS. However, the wheel hums while moving. The new engine rests on a lattice frame suspended by a 43mm inverted fork (USD) up front and a gas-charged preload-adjustable twin shock at the rear. The engine is air- and oil-cooled, single-cylinder, long-stroke. It has a displacement of 440cc and produces 27bhp and 38Nm of torque. Both the figures are significantly higher than the Royal Enfield Classic 350. It’s a simple engine, but it’s mated to a six-speed gearbox for added flexibility. The engine is a long-term device. So it’s no wonder it has a lot of low and mid frequencies. This makes the 440  lively, ready to drive and easy to drive. But this is no lazy engine. So it wants to go fast and doesn’t mind hitting the 7000rpm limiter quickly and repeatedly. The throttle is sharp, the gears are spaced and it revs smoothly – and efficiently – from 2000 rpm, so it’s quite manageable. It also sounds great when you open the throttle at low revs and the exhaust note sounds rich and sweet at the same time.

In terms of focus, the new 440cc could be a bit quieter. It can also run with less noise after 4500 rpm. Not that the vibration wouldn’t leave your hands spinning during a 30-minute ride, but considering how smooth it feels below 4,000 rpm, you can spin the mid-range just as well. If you now decide to drive 90 km/h in sixth gear, the wheel is in a good position and makes the driving experience tireless. 100km/h is in sixth, although there is some noise from the steering wheel, seat and pedals, but not loud enough to cause concern. With that in mind, riding the X440 should help the bike’s touring ability if you choose to stick to the speed limits.

Royal Enfield Classic 350
