Chicken Dak bungalow Recipe is a classical Anglo- Indian dish. It is a flavorful chicken curry cooked with a blend of spices. This recipe originated during the British Raj in India. It is interesting how this curry has got its name. Not many people know why it is known as Dak bungalow curry.
The word “Dak” represent the postal system in Bengali, and the lavish chicken curry got its name from the Dak bungalow which was basically the circuit house allotted to British officials who were posted in remote areas with limited access to food.
Chicken Dak bungalow is a simple and comforting curry using minimal ingredients. The specialty of this recipe is the addition of egg and potatoes which are boiled and then fried.
Now let’s talk about the ingredients which are mainly used for this recipe. It  requires very few ingredients which is readily available in any Indian kitchen.

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE MARINATE OF CHICKEN DAK BUNGALOW:

Chicken 1 kg
Ginger paste 2 tbsp.
Garlic paste 2 tbsp.
Curd 100 gram.
Turmeric powder 1/2 tbsp
Red chili powder 1/2 tbsp
Cumin powder 1/2 tbsp
Coriander powder 1/2 tbsp

For the Dak bungalow curry

4 tablespoon mustard oil
4 piece medium sized onion
1 tsp turmeric powder
4 piecees potatoes
4 piecees eggs
5-6 green chilli
1 tsp garam masala powder
Salt as per taste
1/2 sugar
3 cups of hot water

WHOLE SPICES FOR TEMPERING

1 piece cinnamon stick
1 piece bay leaf
2-3 piece cardamom pods
2 red chilies

 

HOW TO MAKE CHICKEN DAK BUNGALOW

Chicken Dak bungalow is very easy and a simple dish to make. So let me tell you how to cook this at home in restaurant style.
1. First slice the onion and also peel the skin of the potatoes.
2. Then chop the chilies
3. Chop ginger and garlic and prepare of paste for the marinade.
4. Wash the chicken and pat dry the chicken pieces. Make sure they are dry before marinate.
5. Then take a bowl, add curd and marinate the chicken with all the ingredients mentioned under “for the marinate” under ingredients.
6. Then set aside to marinate for at least 30 minutes.
7. Boiled potatoes and cut in halves.
8. Then boiled eggs.
9. Sprinkles some turmeric powder with salt over the boiled eggs and potatoes. Then fry potatoes and eggs till the both sides have a golden colour and keep aside.

COOKING THE DAK BUNGLOW

1. Heat the oil in a wok, once the oil turns hot, add cinnamon, cardamon, red chilies and bay leaf for tempering.
2. Add the marinated chicken cook on a high flame for 10 minutes.
3. Add the chopped chilies and salt as per taste, stir for few minutes.
4. Then add water and bring it to boil.
5. Cover the pan and cook till chicken and potatoes boiled properly.
6. Then add in the fried eggs and sugar. Then look further for 10 minutes.
7. Check seasoning and adjust if required.
8. Now it’s time to switch off the flame and the dalicious Dak Bangalow chicken curry is ready to serve.

9. Serve this recipe with steamed rice or roti. 

NOTES

1. You can use a store bought ginger garlic paste instead of making it.
2. You can use store bought garam masala, but I prefer making my own garam masala.
3. Tomatoes do not go with this dish.
4. Basically this dish is not high on spice but if you love a spicy turn, you can add more red chili powder as per your wish.
5. This dish goes very well with sweet pulao.
6. Cook this dish using mustard oil for the best results.
