BJP Wins Big In Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, & Chhattisgarh: What Does It Mean For BJP In The Upcoming Lok Sabha Elections In 2024?

by | Dec 5, 2023 | INDIAN POLITICS | 0 comments

Recently, the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, and Telangana saw the Assembly Elections take place, where the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) triumphed in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, while Congress marked its victory in Telangana, and ZPM (Zoram People’s Movement) defeated others to form the government in Mizoram.

A day after the BJP’s glorious victory in three states during the Assembly Elections was announced, PM Narendra Modi called the poll results as very encouraging. Prior to the commencement of the Parliamentary Winter Session, PM Modi explained that when you are involved in people’s welfare, every war can be won. The Bharatiya Janata Party swept the Heartland of Hindi with an incredible electoral performance in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh on Sunday. Sadly, the BJP lost its place in Mizoram and Telangana.

The Congress had put on a gloomy show in the elections but seized power from the BRS in Telangana. The BJP won 163 seats total in Madhya Pradesh, 115 seats total in Rajasthan, and 54 seats total in Chhattisgarh. Bharatiya Janata Party’s victories in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh speak of its consolidated hold over the Heartland of Hindi and in straight contests against its principal national opponent.

The BJP’s Big Win In The Recent Assembly Elections

The current Indian electoral map now speaks volumes about the divergence between the BJP strongholds in North as well as West India and Peninsular India, where non-BJP political parties are in power. The Bharatiya Janata Party’s performance in Telangana, where it gained 8-seats as compared to just 1-seat last time, is noteworthy and highly commendable.

The BJP election campaign revolved around PM Narendra Modi, relegating regional leaders such as CM Shivraj Singh Chauhan of Madhya Pradesh to the background. This was an extremely risky plan of the BJP, considering its defeat in the Karnataka elections this year in the month of May, after it antagonised caste groups and regional satraps.

What Led To Congress’ Defeat In The Recent Elections?

Congress’ lead member, Jairam Ramesh, expressed his opinion on the political party losing the recent Assembly Elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Jairam Ramesh acknowledged that the election results are indeed disappointing; however, he also stressed that the party isn’t losing hope. In spite of facing a huge setback, he highlighted Congress’ determination, expressing that their resolve is strong.

The Congress was eyeing repeating the Assembly Elections results when the political party clinched victory from the BJP’s hands, albeit only to lose power when a group of their MLAs defected to the BJP in the year 2020. While Congress member Kamal Nath had hoped to avenge his short-lived government’s fall, ultimately the political party failed to come even close to the BJP’s numbers during this Assembly Elections.

CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s widespread appeal and goodwill, along with the initiation of the Ladli Behna Yojana, which is a welfare scheme for women across the state of Madhya Pradesh, worked in favour of the BJP during this election. The electoral result of the Rajasthan Assembly Elections has once again repeated the phenomenon called the revolting door that was witnessed in the year 1993. Talking about Ashok Gahlot’s governance, it seems like he failed to implement welfare schemes correctly and deliver them to the general public.

During the Congress party’s reign in Rajasthan, led by CM Ashok Gahlot, to implement and execute welfare plans for the general public, Gahlot lacked strong organisation and effective micro-management tactics. The BJP’s strong election campaign across the state gave it an edge over Congress. Chhattisgarh also disappointed the Congress Party, as it failed to gather sufficient votes to form a government there. Just like in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Congress failed to meet its promises that were made earlier in Chhattisgarh. This year’s defeat in the Assembly Elections was a loss Congress had never imagined!

Factors That Paved The Way For The BJP’s Win

Leading faces from the BJP camp had talks with media houses. The outcomes of the Assembly Elections have exceeded the expectations of the Bharatiya Janata Party. In spite of the exit polls forecasting a tough fight for the BJP in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh, the political party surprised the entire nation by winning with massive votes in these three states.

The BJP continued its election campaign with PM Narendra Modi as the star face of the campaign. In the year 2018, when these states organised the Assembly Elections the last time, the BJP had lost all of them. This was followed by an epic win in the Lok Sabha Elections in the year 2019, in which the BJP got more seats as compared to the LS Elections in the year 2014, which strengthened the belief that Modi’s mass appeal can be relied upon in the Assembly Elections too.

During this year’s Assembly Elections that were held recently, the BJP portrayed PM Narendra Modi’s image as a global leader that favoured the political party. According to BJP members, the support of women voters in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh helped the Bharatiya Janata Party win big. CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s fanbase among women voters who are 26-million in the state is strong. Interestingly, the number of female voters has risen to 2-percent this time.

On the occasion of this year’s Assembly Elections, the BJP focused on strengthening its organisational structure as well as coordination between the party and the government. The leading faces of the BJP stated that its attempt to present a balanced combination of Hindutva, welfare politics, and development that countered Congress’ push has worked well on the ground. The BJP’s mass appeal has helped the political party counter Congress’s alleged appeasement politics towards certain communities.

What’s Next In 2024 For The BJP?

The outcome of this year’s Assembly Elections does suggest that the BJP has advantages in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The poll verdict denotes PM Modi’s magical connection with the voters, especially in the Heartland of Hindi. It speaks volumes that the BJP remains robust as well as its cadres are motivated. The election outcomes reinforce the fact that the Bharatiya Janata Party’s narrative carries resonance among voters, while Congress’ narrative can’t spread the magic. If each of these factors that are mentioned in this article is taken into account separately, the 2024 political battle contours become clearer.
