The world of Hindi movie industry is famous for the various song sequences that they have been creating with much grandeur and aplomb to give those song sequences a larger-than-life experience. In a recent development, it was revealed by the famous choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant that how she wanted to make a dream Bollywood song sequence for the movie ‘Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani’ that is directed by Karan Johar and starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the titular roles. The whole team went through so many rehearsals that Vaibhavi Merchant felt she probably had co-created the entire movie alongside Karan Johar himself.

Designing the Dream Sequence

The film choreographer, Vaibhavi Merchant, has been imparting extensive knowledge in dancing to several Bollywood celebrities for over two decades now. In a recent interview with a news portal, Vaibhavi Merchant shared how fervently she and Karan Johar had wanted to design a catchy yet heart-touching romantic dance number that would be appreciated by the audience, contemplating over, which they came up with the idea of making a song that is called ‘Tum Kya Mile’ on a massive scale. Vaibhavi also mentioned that Karan Johar went on to pay tribute to the legendary director, the late Yash Raj Chopra by including the song sequence ‘Hogaya Hai Tujhko Toh Pyar Sanjna’ from his Bollywood cult movie ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (DDLJ)’ that saw Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol Devgn winning immense fame as the evergreen romantic on-screen couple forever in the Hindi movie industry.

She mentioned that this time, Karan Johar did not plan to shoot the song sequences in any exotic foreign locations but rather stay within India. According to her, Karan Johar suddenly came up with the idea of paying tribute to Yash Raj Chopra by including one of his famous dance numbers ‘Hogaya Hai Tujhko Toh Pyar Sanjna’. This one aspect of Karan Johar had made Vaibhavi Merchant claim that she has become the biggest fan of the director. She mentioned that this made working with him more comfortable and they could successfully execute the making of their dream sequence ‘Tum Kya Mile’ for their movie.

The Suspension of Disbelief for Vaibhavi

The moment of actually making the hero Ranveer Singh and the heroine Alia Bhatt prepare for the shooting of the romantic dance number was a moment of disbelief for Vaibhavi Merchant but it was soon suspended, according to her, due to the magical and directorial touch of Karan Johar. According to Vibhavi Merchant, Karan Johar did not have any apprehension in his mind as to, whether the making of the dance sequence would work out or not. He, according to the choreographer, seemed to be extremely confident in himself and the entire team that the song sequence would turn out to be such that every audience, who is watching the movie, would fall in love with it. He seemed not just confident but was driven by extreme conviction at the same time.

Overcoming the Challenges to the Shooting

Despite planning out everything in the most impeccable fashion possible, still, there lurked a few serious challenges for the entire team that they would have needed to overcome to make the song find a place in the list of favourite ringtones in the mobile phones of the audience. The first challenge, though many people, especially, Ranveer Singh fans, would have a hard time believing this is making Ranveer Singh dance and lip-sync to a romantic song that would be playing in the background. Ranveer Singh last showed his skill in lip-syncing to songs in his 2013 movie ‘Gunday’, where he shared the screen space with Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Kapoor. The main worry for the entire team of choreography was how to make the ‘Khalibali’ of the Hindi movie industry look all dreamy and romantic and keep on staring at the heroine with dove eyes throughout the shooting of the song sequence. On revealing her problem with Ranveer Singh before Karan Johar, both Vaibhavi Merchant and Ranveer Singh were instructed by him to do extensive rehearsals on this aspect of the dance with each other. Therefore, as the saying goes, ‘practice makes a man perfect’, Ranveer Singh looked all charming in the sequence and the song is gaining many likes from the side of the audience so far.

The second challenge to the shooting of the dance sequence was to get Alia Bhatt to do a soft romantic song sequence like this one as she has never done something of this sort so far. However, Alia being far more mature now than, she was earlier, decided to pop up at ‘Mannat’, Shah Rukh Khan’s place to get some tips from him as to how to execute such soft romantic song sequences. It was told that she left the place after having learned a lot from the evergreen prince of romance of the Hindi movie industry. Alia Bhatt’s experience with dancing to soft romantic songs such as that of ‘Tum Kya Mile’ is extremely limited as she had just done ‘Ishq Wala Love’ at the beginning of her career and to a certain extent in her last flop film ‘Dear Zindagi’ with Shah Rukh Khan. So, it was quite appreciable on her side to visit Shah Rukh Khan for his precious guidance and to have some tips as to how to execute the intricate romantic movements.

Though it seemed to be quite a tougher challenge for the choreographer to make the two actors execute such an intricate romantic dance sequence so perfectly, at the last moment, they turned out to be masters in their art as both of them executed the song with extreme perfection and dedication. The entire song sequence has turned out to be just great and is garnering a lot of praise so far from the viewers.

‘Tum Kya Mile’ is a romance melody that has Arijit Singh singing it in his beautiful voice and is justly accompanied by another singing diva Shreya Ghoshal. The music has been composed by Pritam. It is the song that has won immense love and appreciation so far in the entire movie from the viewers. ‘RARKPK’ will be seeing Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt sharing a beautiful chemistry on the screen heightened by the acting talent of other veterans such as Dharmendra, Shabana Azmi and Jaya Bachchan in essential roles.
