A Rising Superstar in the Making: The first American teen to win the US Open, Coco Gauff creates history After Serena Williams in 1999

She made a love sign for the camera before embracing her family.

“I feel like it hit all at once because I didn’t want to tell myself it was match point on the match points; I didn’t want to start shaking. So when it happened and, like, finally it was over, my previous matches (had) taken me like six, seven match points to win, and that was on the first one, so I was a little bit shocked and I couldn’t breathe either,” Gauff made a statement after realising she had won.

“I would think in the past it would be more relief than joy,” she said, adding, “but I think with all the growth and maturity I’ve done, it’s definitely more joy than relief,” exclaimed the teen, visibly jubilant.

After triumphing, she bowed her head and prayed. “I simply wanted to say thank you, and I knew that all the hardships had been necessary to make that moment even more special. If everything had been simple, I don’t think I would have felt as grateful as I did at the time,” she added, “It goes without saying that when you lose, you wonder, ‘Why isn’t it happening now? Nothing could have been more ideal than this time, Coco commented.

Obviously, when you’re losing, you’re like, ‘Why isn’t it happening now?’ It couldn’t have been any more perfect than this moment; doing it in the U.S., in New York City, is just incredible.”

For some, the degree of recognition that comes with an American adolescent capturing the U.S. Open can be both captivating and intimidating. Since Serena Williams won the U.S. Open in the year 1999 at the age of 17, Gauff is the first to have repeated history once again at such a tender of just 19 years. Early success, fame, and wealth have overwhelmed young sportsmen in every discipline. They could drift off course thereby indulging in excessive vanity, finally leading to the loss of the desires that propelled them to their first title, or get haughty. However, this young girl might have some different thoughts as she feels that remaining humble at heart and showing dedication and diligence towards one’s work is the ultimate step to victory. This reveals how she is still holding on to her deferential side in spite of being the prestigious bearer of such an equally prestigious title.

With her feet still remaining grounded to the earth, Gauff doesn’t appear to be having a problem with it as of yet. Gauff nonchalantly praised Billie Jean King, who was also there on stage, for battling for equal wages for women after getting her check for $3 million. This gesture exhibited her perspective, wit, and charm that comes from her down–to–earth nature all at once.

“She is so humble,” Pere Riba, her coach, said after the match. “Her work ethic is so strong and professional, and she has very good manners. Put all of that together, and she will only get better. She can handle it all.”

Riba and Brad Gilbert have only been collaborating with Gauff since June, just before Wimbledon. This summer, Corey Gauff, the father of Gauff, asked Riba to train his daughter temporarily before making the arrangement permanent. According to Coco Gauff, her father also suggested employing Gilbert. But Corey Gauff continues to be a reliable inspiration.

The father is a team member. Coco values it the most, according to Riba. Her parents are really significant to her.

A brief professional background

Tennis prodigy Gauff has displayed exceptional talent despite her young age, including a surprising victory over Venus Williams in the Wimbledon first round. Gauff has been overcoming obstacles to continually raise her standing on the international level, winning four competitions since going professional in 2018. She faced Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open finals, where she attempted to win her maiden Grand Slam championship. Since turning pro in 2018, she has won four competitions. In the 2023 U.S. Open, Gauff defeated Aryna Sabelenka. It had been a memorable game of her life as she made an unexpected comeback from an imminent defeat to a major win. This was the first Grand Slam triumph for a player under the tender age of 15.

Given her neat performance in several of her games, Gauff continues to have room to grow as a player, which might give her rivals a run for their titles. She’ll probably give her remarkable speed game a little more muscle, and she’ll keep working on her forehand, something she had largely fixed until the summertime hard-court circuit started.

The mother of Gauff, Candi Gauff, credited her daughter’s self-discipline for her accomplishments. No wonder, with such great achievements in the waiting, it is just self-discipline that can take her a long way ahead.

“Coco is a really committed, disciplined individual. She was a really talented youngster. She always put forth her best effort. On the “Today” programme, Candi Gauff remarked that it originates from within her.

If all these adulations were not enough, the rising superstar in the making has possibly received the best award or gift of her life; an adoring email from the end of none other than Roger Federar himself.

“Congratulations, Coco Gauff. I’ve been following you for a long time and watching your games. It’s wonderful to see all of the effort and enthusiasm getting recognised. Federer remarked, “You shine brighter than ever.

Serena Williams too had congratulated Coco Gauff on winning the US Open.

Coco Gauff won the US Open, and in response, Serena Williams praised the 19-year-old for “an amazing” accomplishment. Gauff, who grew up idolising Williams, beat Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the US Open to win a Grand Slam, much like the tennis superstar did 24 years earlier.

Williams, who ended her professional tennis career following the 2022 US Open, took some time to extend congratulations to Gauff on her special day. “Ahhhhhhhhhh!!! Amazing!!!!!!!”Williams saw her tale on Instagram.

Gauff paid Williams homage.

Not letting her success take the better of her humility, Gauff reflected on the people who encouraged her to take up the racket and hold onto the hope that maybe someday she would become a tennis superstar and a legendary champion after winning her maiden Grand Slam championship.

Gauff admired Serena and Venus Williams as a child. Gauff has an exclusive message for the Williams sisters after winning the Grand Slam at the age of 19. “Yes, that is insane. To be completely honest, they are the reason I am holding this award today.

They’ve given me the freedom to grow up and have faith in my ideas. You know, the number of all-black tennis stars dominating the sport wasn’t that high. The only thing I can recall at the time when I was much younger, was them,” remarks the teenager, clutching the title close to her bosom.
